A Biblical Worldview of the Decline of the Family in America

Emily Hinton | SBS Class of 2024

Throughout the history of humanity, the family has served as the foundational unit upon which society is built and functions. Over time, Americans have disregarded this truth by attempting to redefine the meaning of marriage and family, resulting in a reality in which humans were never intended to live. The economic instability and poverty troubling many today, the growing danger caused by crime and teenage delinquency, and the increasing rate of mental illness among children and adults are all connected to family breakdown and serve as evidence that the decline of the biblical family structure in American society has led to the decline of the nation. In order to solve this issue, it is important to understand the history of family breakdown, the degree to which the loss of God’s model for the family has negatively affected individuals and society, and the role of the Church in the restoration and preservation of God’s most sacred institution.
